COST EFFECTIVENESS
Demonstrating an ability to provide cost-effective occupational therapy services using telehealth for home evaluations with outcomes equal to, or surpassing in-person services, would significantly change the way services are provided locally and nationally. Evidence of positive telehealth occupational therapy outcomes will lead to new legislation expanding Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement. Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement will lead to widespread coverage of services in all private healthcare providers such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, United Healthcare, and Cigna. The effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions in the home to address occupational needs will lead to an increased awareness of the value and cost-effectiveness of occupational therapy services, resulting in a dramatic increase in utilization
Shift in Practice
There will be a shift from almost exclusive in-person services to incorporation of significantly more telehealth services. This shift will occur across the country and in all practice settings. It will become “the norm” to use technology to access occupational therapists, as well as many other healthcare professional, instead of being seen in an office or clinic. This will result in better healthcare outcomes for patients and an expansion of proactive interventions.
The New Normal
The daily practice of occupational therapists would change dramatically. The shift from a facility or clinic based to remote based will mean that therapists will see more clients within a single business day, since no time is lost traveling from location to location. General practitioners will be encouraged to consult with content area specialists to best meet the needs of their clients. Contact with specialists will expand the general practitioners advanced skills and knowledge resulting in better outcomes. Thus, occupational therapy will become widely recognized profession within the U.S. healthcare system.
