FUNDING SOURCES

Unfortunately, making changes at home to make living easier and safer isn't free!  Often, people have to pay for the changes themselves.  There are some places where you MAY be able to get some things "covered" or paid for.  The funding sources available are listed on the right.  A brief summary of the source, criteria for participation, and links to additional information is provided.

Medicare

Medicare is federally funded healthcare insurance for persons over 65, those with disabilities and person's with end stage renal disease.  Some medical devices are covered such as walkers, canes, hospital beds and wheelchairs for those who meet the criteria.  Medicare recipients are responsible for 20% of the cost of medical devices which are covered under the Medicare Part B benefit.  For more information CLICK HERE to be brought to medicare.com.  Your occupational therapist can help determine what items you may qualify for under this healthcare insurance

Medicaid

Medicaid is a state Healthcare Insurance. It is funded by both the state and federal government.  This insurance is designed for person's of ultra low income, typically at or below the poverty level and children with disabilities.  There are funds for accessible changes to the home and some medical devices.  participants must qualify and be enrolled in Medicaid Waivers programs.  Each state has these programs and they vary significantly between states.  For a current listing of the medicaid waivers in your state, CLICK HERE to be brought to Medicaid. gov. VA

There are several VA benefits that cover accessible changes to the home and medical equipment for those who qualify.  In order to determine if you are eligible for any of the VA benefits, you must see an MD at the VA.  You do NOT need to get all of your medical care thru the VA to qualify for benefits. The grants available for home accessibility and medical equipment is done through the orthotics and prosthetics division.  CLICK HERE for a list of grants and coverage. These grants include the HISA Grant, SAH Grant, SHA Grant and others.  VA are not required to have acquired the injury during service for eligibility for all of the grants.  The amount of funding varies depending on the grant.

MSAA

The Multiple Sclerosis Association of America is a non-profit organization that provides some medical devices typically not covered by Medicare or other healthcare insurances.  They offer a one-time benefit to those who qualify. ALS Association

The ALS Association is a non-profit organization that provides information and resources to person's with ALS.  Each local chapter is has different resources available. The ALS Association has a large network of loaner closet.  Here, person's with ALS can borrow items from the closet for free.  The only request is that items are returned to the closet when no longer needed.
